OPHTHALMOLOGY (Gr. ὀφθαλμός, eye), the science of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the eye (see Eye and Vision). From the same Greek word come numerous other derivatives: e.g. ophthalmic, the general name for conjunctiva inflammations (see Eye diseases, under Eye); and the instruments ophthalmometer and ophthalmoscope (see Vision).
