FBA; British medieval historian; Fellow of St John's College from 1911, and was also the inaugural Professor of Medieval History at the University of Cambridge (1937–42); editor of The English Historical Review for over a decade (jointly from 1925 to 1927, then solely from 1927 to 1937)
