Burton, Sir William Westbrooke, knighted by patent 18 Nov., 1844, recorder of Daventry 1826-7, judge at Cape 1828-33, New South Wales 1833-44, Madras 1844-57, president of council at Sydney 1858-62, author of State of Religion and Education in Australia, originally in the navy and served at attack on New Orleans in 1814, a student of the Inner Temple 27 Nov., 1819, called to the bar 26 Nov., 1824 (son of Edmund Burton, of Daventry, gent.); bom 31 Jan., 1794; married 1st, 5 April, 1827, Margaret, dau. of Leny Smith, of Homerton, Middlesex; she died s.p. 19 Sept., 1846; he married 2ndly, 11 June, 1849, Maria Alphonsine, dau. of late John Beatty West, Esq., M.P. Dublin.
