have probably been out of the possession of the College for a very long time. It may be conjectured that they perished in the great fire of London, when, as we know, the College was destroyed; but this is merely a conjec- ture, and is somewhat weakened by the fact that the Annals of the College, written by Dr Caius, the second President, have been preserved to the present day. " Om- nia periere," says Dr Walter Charlton, referring to the conflagration of the College, in his Harveian Oration for the year 1680; but he does not specially mention manu- scripts among the valuables that were destroyed.
