At sixteen he made his first appearance on the stage in “ Money,” at the Haymarket, at that time under the manage- ment of the Bancrofts. After playing the lead in the first provincial tour of *In the Ranks,” he appeared at the Lyceum as Sebastran in “Twellth Night,” i which his
