Son of John Bignell, Esq. now thirty-nine years a purser in the royal navy.

This officer’s first commission bears date Sept. 10th, 1801. He was severely wounded, and obliged to surrender to the Americans, while commanding the Hunter brig, under the orders of Captain Robert Heriott Barclay, on Lake Erie, Sept. 10th, 1813^[1]. He obtained his present rank on the 19th^[1], Sept. 1815; and about the same period, a pension for wounds, of £150 per annum.
